Shaklee Wallops the California Drought!
Today Shaklee is being "recognized by the Pleasanton City Council for its initiative in significant water reduction, as an example of what businesses can achieve when simple steps toward conservation are employed. So far over 2.8 million gallons of water have been saved over a period of 8 months."
Shaklee's World Headquarters in Pleasanton CA has 240 employees who manage Shaklee operations in 8 countries. In 1998 the building was designed with sustainability as its guiding principle. The "Savings by Design Energy Efficiency Integration Award" was bestowed on Shaklee by the AIA for reaching their goals in environmentally-effective design.
Here are just a few of the tactics Shaklee used to save that 2.8 million gallons of water at the World Headquarters building. They installed water softeners on the cooling towers as well as aerators on faucets. The latter reduced the water flow from 1.5 gallons per minute to .5 gallons per minute. They installed low-flow shower heads, saving 1.5 gallons per minute. They also put in low-flow flushers, saving 1.5 gallons per flush. They also reduced water use in landscape irrigation by switching to drip irrigation. Previously they'd used pop-up sprinklers.
What can you do in your home or office? One big step would be to use the Shaklee cleaners and laundry products. They're good for you and for the Earth - and very reasonable. Another easy one - and a favorite of mine - is to just turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth & turn it back on when you need it. It's so simple, but can save a great deal of water over a year's time. Though it was a long time ago, I can still hear my father telling me to do that as a child. How about you? Was your father frugal too?
