How's Your Brain Doing?

Were you aware that your Gut Bacteria impacts your brain, for better or for worse?  You've probably been hearing a lot about probiotics and also about eating the yogurt that has beneficial bacteria, but no added sugar.  Unhealthy gut flora (intestinal plant or bacterial life) can actually change your mental outlook, leading to depression, anxiety, autism and other problems.

What's in your gut flora?  Your own cells account for about 10%.  The other 90% is bacteria, fungi, viruses and other microorganisms.  If the "invaders" aren't kept in check, you can experience a downturn in your how you feel about your life and in your ability to process information.

UCLA researchers found that probiotics improved the brain function in participants in a study.  "Researchers have known that the brain sends signals to your gut, which is why stress and other emotions can contribute to gastrointestinal problems.  This study shows what has been suspected but until now had been proved only in animal studies:  that signals travel the opposite way as well."

So this two-way street from intestines to brain and back opens up a new area of research.  Natural dietary changes look the most promising for improving the your gut and its buddy, your brain.  The gut is sending messages to your brain - and the messages are more positive if the gut flora is rich in probiotics.
