Ghost & Goblins &...Sugar!

Yes, we are rapidly moving into some of the key sugar holidays of the year.  First on the list is Halloween, which is a serious candy event with weeks or months of candy supplied.  You might do a favor for the tykes and teens coming to your door by providing store certificates, little toys or books or a donation to a worthy cause.  A food that is not high in sugar would work too. (Remember getting apples or oranges from neighbors when you trick or treated in the Dark Ages?)  Or maybe you can think of something more creative.

As we move on into the fall, Thanksgiving provides another excuse for eating a lot - and the candied yams, breads, pies that pack that sugar punch.  I used to find that they would linger in the larder for days afterward because I always wanted to have enough food for an army in case one showed up.

December is overflowing with events - parties, school functions, and the holidays themselves.  We tend to give ourselves permission to overindulge, don't we?  It's all right to have a sugary treat once in a while, but not on a regular basis.  Even better is to find some other treat without much sugar to act as your special reward.

With these sugar months also comes illnesses, as you may have noticed over the years. Is it just the change of seasons or is it something more deeply rooted?  Are you aware that sugar is one of the most dangerous foods we can eat?  Even a couple of teaspoons throws your body out of balance for several hours, leaving it a prey to invaders.  It opens you up to colds, plus more serious problems like diabetes, heart disease, tooth/gum problems, osteoporosis and immune system deficiency.  With a high sugar diet also comes obesity and threat of an early death.

Sugar is highly addictive.  It was introduced into North America as a rare, exotic, expensive food in 1750.  Even by 1900 Americans were only consuming 10 lbs. per year.  Guess how much we were up to by the year 2000?  160 lbs. per person per year.  Much of it is in processed foods, so we're not even aware that we're eating sugar.  That spells trouble.  Think about what you can do in the next 2 months to improve this picture for you and your family.  One thing that pops into my mind is to be sure you're taking top-notch supplements like Shaklee's to give yourself the boost you need.

This is so true, whenever I eat more sugar, than a cold or pneumonia is sure to follow. Great article, very informative and this is something that everybody needs reinforcement on. Thanks for the reminder.

I'd suggest, at the end of paragaph 4, that you delete "all of its cumbersome baggage, and add "increased chance of early death." It's true, plus catches one's attention. KAK
