More Sun in a Bottle
Just what does vitamin D do for you? Why all the fuss?
1. Promotes bone growth and remodeling, aiding in calcium absorption for bones & teeth.
2. Helps support healthy heart function.
3. Facilitates healthy cell development.
4. Helps promote the immune system, including reducing tumors, reducing inflammation and fighting colorectal cancer.
So how come we don't have enough vitamin D? One problem is lack of sun in the darker winter months. They say that anyone living north of Los Angeles (and that's most of us) should be concerned about the greater number of dark hours in the late fall & winter. (Remember that it's the sun on your skin that promotes vitamin D.)
Another issue is darker skin, such as in many African-Americans and Indians (from both America and India). It's more difficult for them to absorb vitamin D. Other factors working against vitamin D are: lack of exercise, obesity, use of sunblock, diet of foods low in vitamin D.
