Your Gut & Your Brain, More Closely Connected Than We Thought Part II
Here's another quote from Brain Maker by Dr. David Perlmutter. He suggests a low-carb, high-fat, high-fiber diet as being very good for the microbiome. "This particular diet supplies the ingredients to nourish not only healthy biology (and thus a healthy microbiome) but also a healthy brain. A diet that keeps blood sugar balanced keeps gut bacteria balanced."
He praises eating fruits and vegetables for fiber, which also "produces the right balance of those short-chain fatty acids to keep the gut lining in check." Perlmutter says to avoid gluten for the good of both gut and brain - and the anti-inflammatory aspect of this diet is also good for both of them.
Let's review a bit more from Brain Maker. Some foods suggested are: pickles, pickled (with brine) fruits & veggies, kefir, live-cultured yogurt, sauerkraut, fermented meat, fish or eggs, kombucha tea, tempeh, kimchi.
(Kimchi is very spicy.)
Is there anything from Shaklee that I'd suggest for better gut-brain health? Shaklee's Optiflora (#80638) is a powdered prebiotic and a tiny capsule probiotic. Also helpful for digestion/elimination is EZ-Gest (#20633) for its digestive enzymes, Stomach Soothing Complex (#20601) made with soothing herbs, such as ginger and peppermint.
Fiber is also important to keep your body running as it should. Fruits and veggies are great sources, but so are other fibers. We are told to take in 20 to 35 grams daily and that we actually get about half of that. To take Fiber Plan Powder (#20307), you use 3 tsp. a day. There are 60 servings in a can. Another choice is Fiber Plan Tablets (#20435). You use 5 a day of the 75 tablets in the bottle. Another fiber product is Fiber Advantage Chewy Apple Cinnamon Bars (#21220), which come 8 in a box. The bars promote microflora and regularity plus long-term colon health.
Last but far from least is Herb-Lax (#20307) - 240 tablets per bottle. It gives you a gentle laxative for mild cleansing and helps with the body's natural processes. It has been in the Shaklee arsenal since 1960 - one of Dr. Forrest Shaklee's "Signature Formulas". It contains many herbs, including senna leaf.
For brain health both MindWorks (#22066) - 30 per bottle - and OmegaGuard (#21253) - 180 softgels per bottle - are very helpful. OmegaGuard provides help in other directions - the heart, the immune system, as well as the brain.
